
Land Transport and Safety
Land Transport and Safety develops, promotes and implements policies and standards affecting road-use management, road and rail safety, driver safety and education and vehicle management.Responsibilities:

Current projects:
- new Queensland driver licence
- major road safety campaigns
- penalties and sanctions review
- The release of the Queensland Road Safety Strategy 2004–2011—'safe4life'.
- The implementation of new chain-of-responsibility legislation for heavy vehicles to improve safety for all road users—a national first.
- The introduction of new speeding penalties, and penalties for not wearing seat belts or helmets, to encourage safe road-user behaviour. Research* has shown improvements in people's attitudes towards unsafe driving behaviour:
- 99 per cent of those surveyed say those who drink and drive are irresponsible
- 91 per cent agree speeding is a major contributor to crashes
- 98 per cent say school-transport-safety advertising reminds them that children can be unpredictable and that adults need to take extra care around schools.
