The Federal Disability Discrimination Act 1992 prohibits direct and indirect discrimination on the grounds of disability and makes it unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of disability in a wide range of areas including transport and infrastructure. The Commonwealth Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002* (the standards) are mandatory under the act. The standards cover premises, infrastructure and conveyances, and apply to public transport operators (bus, coach, taxi, rail and aviation companies and so on) and premises and infrastructure providers (providers of bus stops, airport terminals, railway stations and so on).
The Disability Action Plan describes the progress made, as well as the plans for future action, that will result in public transport in Queensland moving towards accessibility for people with disabilities. Further information about the standards can be found in our publication Important Information for Public Transport Operators and Providers of Infrastructure and Premises for Compliance with the Commonwealth Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (PDF**, 272KB).
