Accessible Public Transport
Compliance informationThe Commonwealth Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002* (the standards) were developed by the federal government in consultation with state, territory and local governments, and representatives from the transport and disability sectors to make public transport more accessible.
The standards cover premises, infrastructure and conveyances, and apply to public transport operators such as bus, coach, taxi and airline companies, and premises or infrastructure providers.
The standards require public transport operators, and owners and operators of public transport infrastructure and premises to meet staged compliance targets in making their services accessible. The first compliance target was on 31 December 2007, continuing in five-yearly increments until 2022 (2032 for railway operators).
For more information regarding compliance requirements, please refer to our publication Important Information for Public Transport Operators and Providers of Infrastructure and Premises for Compliance with the Commonwealth Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (PDF**, 272KB) or contact Queensland Transport's Accessibility and Concessions Policy Unit or ptaccessible@transport.qld.gov.au.While the standards set out how public transport is to be made accessible, the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport Guidelines 2004 assist in understanding and interpreting the obligations imposed. Information on the standards and guidelines is available on the Australian Government's Attorney-General's Department* website.
All state and territory transport ministers have agreed that progress reports on implementation of the standards (both at a national and state or territory level) should be developed. State and territory compliance reports can be located on the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's Disability Rights* website.
The Queensland 'standards compliance report' is available from the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission* website.
