Disability Parking Permit Scheme
A disability parking permit gives the holder different levels of parking privilege. There are two types of permit available in Queensland (blue and red), which are issued according to the person's level of mobility impairment and whether the disability is permanent or temporary.Queensland Transport administers the Disability Parking Permit Scheme and issues permits to people with impaired mobility. The responsibility of providing parking bays, signage and markings remains with local government and parking providers. The disability parking permit does not guarantee the holder access to a parking bay at all times.
Local government parking officers may issue infringement notices for the misuse of private parking bays and local governments may authorise agents, such as shopping centre security personnel, to enforce their requirements.
Blue permit
To be eligible for a blue permit, the applicant must satisfy both of the following conditions.
The applicant must:
- be unable to walk unaided and/or require a wide parking bay to exit and enter their vehicle—and has total dependence on a wheelchair or on a large mobility device (for example, a walking frame). Note: This does not include splints, crutches or walking sticks.
- be a Queensland resident over three years of age.
Organisations
Organisation parking permits are blue permits issued for five years to organisations that are involved in transporting persons who would normally be personally eligible for the issue of a disability parking permit.
Blue permit holders are entitled to:
- parking—free of charge—in metered/regulated areas where the time limit is more than 30 minutes
- the use of disability parking bays (on- and off-street locations) including hospitals or shopping centres.
Red permit
To be eligible for a red permit, the applicant must satisfy both of these conditions:
- the applicant's ability to walk must be severely impaired as a result of permanent or temporary loss of the use of one or both legs, or whose physical condition is detrimentally affected as a result of walking 100 metres
- the applicant must be a Queensland resident over three years of age.
- the use of disability parking bays in off-street locations including hospitals and shopping centres.
