New fees for recreational boat registrations effective from 20 October 2008
The Department of Transport and Main Roads increased recreational vessel registration fees from 20 October 2008 for:
- new registrations
- renewal of existing registrations.
The fees have been increased to provide funding for new and improved public boating infrastructure throughout Queensland.
Fees are calculated on the length of your ship. Exemptions from registration fees are given to totally and permanently incapacitated war pensioners. The new fees as at 1 July 2009 are detailed in the table below.

The registration fee includes a A$16.65 recreational use fee collected by the Department of Transport and Main Roads on behalf of Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries, Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation, for a range of functions to enhance recreational fisheries. 2010-11 bid process for Boating Infrastructure Capital and Maintenance Program (for use by local managing authorities including councils and port authorities)
The bid proposals for new projects to be included in the Boating Infrastructure Capital and Maintenance Program for 2010-11 and future years will begin in September 2009 and officially close on 23 November 2009, local managing authorities will need to submit any new bid proposals prior to this date.
The annual bids process for new projects
The local managing authority bid proposal process consists of:
- Department of Transport and Main Roads bid application form with the following information (where applicable):
- identification of environmental constraints and approval requiried
- signature of local authority to accept management responsibilities of the proposed facility
- identification of environmental constraints and approval requiried
- details of tenure of land
- project concept plans (where requested) including:
- aerial map
- site photos
- car-trailer parking unit (CTU) designs
- integrated development assessment system (IDAS) requirements
- referral checklist.

Members of the general public wishing to make suggestions or enquire about new or upgraded recreational boating facilities and maintenance projects should contact the relevant local managing authority, either council or port authority (see the signage at the facility for further details).
Completed application forms from local managing authorities should be forwarded to your regional Department of Transport and Main Roads officer who is responsible for regional assessment. Regional officers are located within the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Services Division at Townsville, Cairns, Rockhampton, Toowoomba, Nundah and Southport.
