Taking bikes on trains

Citytrain

The Citytrain network extends from the centre of Brisbane, south to Beenleigh and Robina on the Gold Coast, north to Ferny Grove, Shorncliffe, Caboolture and Gympie, east to Cleveland and west to Ipswich and Rosewood.

Bicycles are permitted on Citytrain services, excluding the following peak flow periods: between 7am and 9.30am EST (GMT+10) towards the Central Business District (CBD), between 3pm and 6.30pm EST (GMT+10) outwards from the Central Business District. During these peak flow periods, passengers with bicycles are permitted to travel in the following counter flow periods: in the morning—outwards from the Central Business District; in the afternoon—towards the Central Business District.

Passengers with fold-up bicycles are permitted to travel on the Citytrain network at anytime as long as the bicycle is contained in a carry bag with the following dimensions: 79 cm X 59 cm X 36 cm.

Remember cycling is prohibited at stations and on overbridges and underpasses. Contact Citytrain on +61 7 3606 5555a for more information.

Traveltrain

The Traveltrain network covers the routes between major Queensland centres.

QR states:

Bicycles are accepted as checked luggage on all QR Traveltrain services except for Tilt Train services. This is because the Tilt Train services do not have a baggage car attached to them and there is no room for bicycles in the passenger carriages.

A charge of 20 per cent of the adult economy rail fare for the journey being made applies.

The handle bars must be turned parallel to the bicycle frame and both pedals and any saddle bags must be removed otherwise the bicycle will not be accepted.

It is the responsibility of the passenger to supply tools to do this. Due to workplace health and safety requirements, bicycles that weigh more than 25 kilograms will not be accepted.

Contact Traveltrain on 13 22 35a for more information.

Bike lockers at train and bus stations

Many people find that cycling to a railway station and catching a train suits their travel needs. QR is supporting these 'mixed mode commuters' by providing bike lockers at stations. Bike lockers let you leave your bike for a long period of time with good security. Find out if bike lockers are provided at your station*. To get a locker at a QR station, fill in a form obtained from staff at the station. You will receive a key or be placed on a waiting list. There is a A$50 deposit on the key, refunded when you return the key. Secure bike lockers and racks are available at a select number of South East Busway stations.

Bike lockers are available at:

Bike lockers are assigned on a first in, first served basis. Contact the Busway Operations Centre to find out if a bike locker is available at a station near you:
