Environmentally sustainable transport
Sustainable transport for Queensland allows for everyday activities such as:- visiting our friends and families when we want to
- getting to work and conducting our business
- accessing the goods, services and facilities we need.
We need to take practical steps to attain an environmentally sustainable transport system including:
- reducing air, noise and water pollution from roads, rail, marine and aviation sources
- decreasing the use of private motor vehicles and increasing the use of cycling, walking and public transport
- improving links, efficiency, accessibility and capacity of our transportation system
- using resources including fossil fuels and land-space efficiently
- increasing the integration of our transport and energy systems
- focusing transport planning to provide accessible goods and services rather than the movement of vehicles.
Environmentally sustainable transport*
An environmentally sustainable transport system requires a strategy that addresses all aspects of transport affecting the environment. Many small changes over a long period of time will be required to achieve an environmentally sustainable transport system. Successful transition involves the cooperation of all transport users including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and patrons of public transport.
TravelSmart encourages the use of environmentally friendly transport such as public transport, cycling, walking and car pooling. It supports voluntary change in the behaviour of individuals and organisations by raising awareness through campaigns, and improving access to information and opportunities to use environmentally friendly transport.
