Security cameras on Queensland buses
The Department of Transport and Main Roads has recently funded the supply and installation of closed circuit television systems in approximately 120 buses that are used to provide general route services for service contract areas or routes in regional Queensland. The primary purpose of the system is to address safety and security issues.
In addition to these closed circuit television systems, there are a number of buses that have been fitted with closed circuit television systems through other Queensland Government funding arrangements (TransLink and School Bus Upgrade Scheme) and independently by the operator.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads has developed the following documents for the installation and use of closed circuit television systems on buses:
- recommended specifications for closed circuit television fitted in Queensland buses
- recommended guideline for the installation and use of closed circuit television in Queensland buses
- recommended code of practice for the use of closed circuit television by operators of passenger transport services and infrastructure.
Although all aspects of the installation and use of closed circuit television systems are well covered in the documentation, compliance is currently voluntary. Continuation of this voluntary approach is not considered appropriate in view of the significant risks relating to privacy and failure to maintain closed circuit television systems.
A discussion paper on the proposal to amend legislation to provide for the use of closed circuit television on Queensland buses was made available for comment from 15 December 2008 to 31 January 2009. The date for submissions to be received has now closed.
All submissions received will be considered in the development of the proposed amendments and further consultation with stakeholders will occur during that process.
