Free-flow tolling
What is free-flow tolling?
Free-flow tolling will gradually replace cash toll booths with an intelligent no-stopping tolling system that aims to improve the safety and travel time reliability of Queensland’s road network. On free-flow tolling motorways, tolls are automatically calculated as you pass under a tolling point. Tolls are deducted or billed electronically using:
- an in-vehicle tag (manual top-up option that is linked to your customer account)
- video tolling (pay as you go option that captures an image of your registration plate as you drive under a tolling point).
Which Queensland roads currently have free-flow tolling booths?
In July 2009, free-flow tolling was introduced on the Gateway and Logan motorways.
In the future, free-flow tolling will also be used on the CLEM7 tunnel (opening in early 2010), the Hale Street Link (opening in mid 2010) and the AirportLink (opening in 2012).
What do I need to do?
Before you travel on a toll road in Queensland you may purchase an in-vehicle tag online, over the phone or at customer service centres and participating retailers. For more information, visit the free-flow tolling website*.
What if I don't have a free-flow tolling tag?
If you are unable to purchase a tag prior to driving on a toll road, contact the relevant toll road operator within the specified period of time (48-72 hours depending on the road travelled) to arrange payment. The details of who to contact and by what timeframe will be prominently displayed on road signage.
If you do not arrange payment within the specified timeframes, the registered owner of the vehicle will be sent an invoice for the toll, plus a processing charge from the toll road operator.
What else do I need to know?
When changing your address or vehicle, you need to let the relevant toll operator know your new details. This ensures that you will be tolled correctly and will not receive any extra penalties.
