The strong growth of the Queensland economy, and the movement of freight associated with this growth, has focused attention on the costs of freight transport such as:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads recognises that different modes of transport are more suited to certain freight tasks and aims to optimise the mode or combination of modes used for each task. One strategy is to minimise the total cost and impact on the community by influencing new and existing freight transport services where a change in mode is under consideration. 

The Department of Transport and Main Roads also remains committed to the role of rail in supporting the efficient movement of freight.
