Licensing
Queensland driver licence
The Queensland licensing scheme has adopted the national approach to create safe and proficient drivers and riders.
Q-Ride
Q-Ride competency-based training and assessment is designed to provide an alternative program to obtain a motorbike licence. The aim is to improve road safety for learner motorbike riders in Queensland. Q-Ride is a learn-as-you-ride rider training program in place across Queensland. Go to the motorbike section for additional information about the licensing system for motorbike riders.
Change of address
You must notify the Department of Transport and Main Roads within 14 days if you change your address. You can change your address online, by phoning the department on 13 23 80b or visiting a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre, Queensland Government Agency Program office or police station that issues driver licences in rural areas.
Reporting medical conditions
Drivers who develop a permanent or long-term medical condition that may negatively affect their ability to drive safely must report their condition to the Department of Transport and Main Roads as soon as it develops.
This is in accordance with a law introduced on 1 March 2006, commonly known as Jet’s Law. Previously, drivers were only legally required to report the condition when they obtained or renewed a licence.
Drivers who fail to report a condition as soon as it develops may receive a maximum A$4500 penalty or be disqualified from driving for a certain period.
Visit the medical conditions page for additional information about the requirements of reporting a medical condition.
Online driver licence renewal
Holders of a Queensland open driver licence can now renew their licence online.
Online driver licence renewal is intended for customers who do not need a new licence photograph (these are valid for 10 years), or do not require any changes to their licence (for example, a change of name). You must have a valid credit card to renew your licence online.
Visit the renewing your licence page for more information about online driver licence renewal, or the online driver licence renewal page to access this service.
Driver licence holders are also able to change their address online at the changing your address page.
Visit the home page to access other services online.
Queensland driver licence Marine Licence Indicator
If you have either a recreational marine driver licence or a personal watercraft licence, you can have a Marine Licence Indicator included on your Queensland driver licence.
This indicator will be automatically added to your licence when you renew your licence or obtain a new one (for example, if you need a replacement licence).
Visit the recreational licensing page for more information about the Marine Licence Indicator.
