Getting a licence
The Queensland Government has introduced a graduated licensing system to reduce fatalities on our roads—particularly among young drivers. The aim of the system is to encourage safer and more proficient drivers and riders.
Queensland's licensing system allows novice drivers to improve their driving skills and develop acceptable driving behaviour and practices, while holding a learner, or P1/P2 provisional licence, before upgrading to an open licence. There are seven steps you will need to go through to get an open driver licence in Queensland:
- Written road rules test
- Learner licence
- Practical driving test
- P1 provisional licence
- Hazard perception test
- P2 provisional licence
- Open licence
This process could be slightly different if you:
- held a learner or provisional licence before 1 July 2007
- are 24 years of age
- are 25 years of age or over.
The system also recognises the need for drivers and riders to hold a particular class of licence for a set period of time before being able to upgrade to the next class of licence. This arrangement gives learners the opportunity to gain additional driving skills for the lower class of vehicle before driving or riding more demanding vehicles.
The learner driver section of this website has more about the new graduated licensing system and how to obtain a licence.
