The P2 stage applies to:
- those issued a P1 provisional licence under 24 and who have completed the P1 stage and successfully passed a hazard perception test
- provisional licence holders who are over 25 and have passed the practical driving test
- P2 provisional licence holders returning from a disqualification to a P2 probationary or P2 restricted licence, where at the time of the offence they were under 25
- P1 probationary licence holders progressing to a P2 probationary or provisional licence who have held their P1 licence for an accumulative one year period and have passed the hazard perception test.
When driving while you hold a P2 licence you must:
- display green P plates at the front and rear of your vehicle
- comply with high-powered and performance vehicle restrictions
- not accumulate more than four demerit points in one year
- carry your licence with you at all times when you are driving and show it to a police officer when asked to do so
- obey any conditions stated on your licence
- have a zero (0.00) blood or breath alcohol content if you are under 25 and a 0.05 blood or breath alcohol content if you are over 25, when driving or riding. Drink driving offences carry monetary fines and disqualification periods.
Once you turn 25 years of age, you must:
- continue to clearly display green P plates on the front and rear of your vehicle
- not accumulate more than four demerit points in a one year period
- obey any conditions stated on your licence
- stay under a 0.05 blood alcohol content when driving or riding. Drink driving offences carry monetary fines and disqualification periods.
P2 handbook
You will receive a P2 provisional licence handbook (PDF**, 472KB) when you gain your P2 licence. This will provide information about your P2 licence and outline the conditions and restrictions of a P2 provisional licence.P2 probationary or P2 restricted licence holders
P2 licence holders returning from a disqualification to a P2 probationary or P2 restricted licence, where the offence occurred while they were under 25, must also comply with high-powered and performance vehicle restrictions.
Note: If you hold a restricted licence you must have a zero blood alcohol content regardless of your age. The length of time you must hold your P2 licence depends on how old you are when you were first issued the licence. See the provisional licence period table for how long you must hold your P2 licence.
