Who does the P2 licence apply to?
The P2 licence applies to:
- those issued a P1 type provisional licence while 24 years of age or under, and who have completed the P1 stage and successfully passed the hazard perception test
- provisional licence holders who were 25 years of age and older when they passed the practical driving test
- P2 type provisional licence holders returning from a disqualification to a P2 type probationary or P2 type restricted licence, where at the time of the offence they were under 25 years of age
- P1 type probationary licence holders who are progressing to a P2 type probationary or provisional licence who have held their P1 type licence for an accumulative one year period and have passed the hazard perception test.
What rules must I follow when driving on my P2 licence?
When driving on your P2 type licence, you must:
- display green P-plates at the front and rear of your car (rear only for motorbikes)
- comply with high-powered and performance vehicle restrictions
- not accumulate more than four demerit points in one year
- carry your licence with you at all times when you are driving and show it to a police officer when asked to do so
- obey any conditions stated on your licence
- have a zero (0.00 per cent) blood or breath alcohol content if you are under 25 years of age and a blood or breath alcohol content of below 0.05 per cent if you are 25 years of age or over. Drink driving offences carry monetary fines and disqualification periods
- not drive under the influence of illegal or prescription drugs.
P2 handbook
You will receive a P2 provisional licence handbook (PDF**, 472KB) when you gain your P2 type licence. This will provide information about your P2 type licence and outline the conditions and restrictions of a P2 type provisional licence.Information for P2 probationary and P2 restricted licence holders
P2 type licence holders returning from a disqualification to a P2 type probationary or P2 type restricted licence, where the offence occurred while they were under 25 years of age, must also comply with high-powered and performance vehicle restrictions.
Note: If you hold a restricted licence you must have a zero (0.00 per cent) blood or breath alcohol content regardless of your age. The length of time you must hold your P2 type licence depends on how old you are when you were first issued the licence.
