
Restrictions
P1 type provisional licence holders under 25 years of age
If you are a P1 type provisional licence holder under 25 years of age, you must comply with the following restrictions while driving.P-plates
You must clearly display red P-plates on the front and rear of your car (rear only for motorbikes).
Mobile phone
You must not use your mobile phone while driving, including the hands-free functions and Bluetooth accessories.
Your passengers are banned from using mobile phones on the loudspeaker function.
Passengers
Only one passenger under 21 years of age (excluding immediate family members) may travel with you between 11pm on a day and 5am on the next day. Section 22H of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management — Driver Licensing) Regulation 1999 defines an immediate family member of the driver as:
- the driver's spouse
- a child, step-child, foster child, or ward of the driver
- a step-parent of the driver
- the spouse of a grandparent of the driver
- a brother or sister of the driver
- a stepbrother or stepsister of the driver
- a foster child or ward of a parent or step-parent of the driver
- if the driver is a child —
- an approved carer of the driver
- a child, step-child, foster child or ward of an approved carer of the driver
- a guardian of the driver
- a child, stepchild, foster child, or ward of a guardian of the driver.
High-powered and high performance vehicles
You are not allowed to drive high-powered or high performance vehicles.
P1 type provisional licence holders 25 years of age or over
Once you turn 25 years of age, the restrictions above no longer apply to you but you will still be required to clearly display red P-plates on the front and rear of your car (rear only for motorbikes) while driving.
P2 type provisional licence holders under 25 years of age
If you are a P2 type provisional licence holder under 25 years of age, you must comply with the following restrictions while driving.
P-plates
You must clearly display green P-plates on the front and rear of your car (rear only for motorbikes).
High-powered and high performance vehicles
You are not allowed to drive high-powered or high performance vehicles.
P2 type provisional licence holders 25 years of age or over
Once you turn 25 years of age, the restrictions above no longer apply to you but you will still be required to clearly display green P-plates on the front and rear of your car (rear only for motorbikes) while driving.
P1 and P2 type probationary licence holders — all ages
If you obtained a P1 or P2 type provisional licence while under 25 years of age, when you return from a court imposed disqualification you are required to hold a P1 or P2 type probationary licence for 12 months.
Restrictions relevant to P1 and P2 type licence holders apply for the full probationary period if you were under 25 years of age at the date of the disqualifying offence. A late night driving restriction will also apply for a period of one year.
