Renewing a licence
You can apply to renew your Queensland driver licence up to six weeks before it expires. However, if you hold a P1 type licence you will need to hold this for 12 months before you can progress to a P2 type or open licence. This means that if you renew your P1 type licence six weeks prior to holding it for the required time, you will be issued with another P1 type licence.
You also need to pass a hazard perception test before you can progress from a P1 type licence to a P2 type or open licence. The hazard perception test was introduced on 1 July 2008.
Once you have held your P1 type licence for the required period and passed the hazard perception test, you will need to go to a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre, authorised Queensland Government Agency Program office, or a licensing-issuing police station, to upgrade to a P2 type or open licence, as this is not an automatic process.
If your licence has expired and you do not wish to drive, you have up to five years after the date of expiry before you are required to take another written road rules test and pass another practical (on-road) driving test. If your licence expired more than five years ago, you will need to resit your learner licence road rules test and complete the P1 type and P2 type stages of the licensing system.
If your licence expired more than two years ago, you will be required to show at least three evidence of identity documents when you apply for the renewal of your licence.
You will also need to pay the driver licence renewal fee.
Where do I renew my licence?
You can renew your licence at a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre, authorised Queensland Government Agency Program office, or a licensing-issuing police station.
If you hold an open driver licence you can renew it online with your credit card. You can use this service if you do not need a new licence photograph (these are valid for 10 years), or do not require any changes to your licence (for example name). You cannot renew online if:
- your licence has expired
- your licence is suspended or disqualified
- you need a medical certificate and do not have a current certificate lodged with the department — remember, if you develop a permanent or long-term medical condition that may affect your ability to drive safely, you must report it to the department as soon as it develops.
Learner, P1 type provisional, and P2 type provisional licences cannot be renewed online.
You will receive a transaction reference number if you renew your driver licence online. A renewal label will be sent in the mail within five working days. The label will include your name, a unique security number, your licence effective and expiry dates, and your licence type and class/es. On receipt of this label, you must promptly attach the label to the back of your existing driver licence in the space provided for change of details labels.
If you want a Marine Licence Indicator added to your new licence, you will have to renew in person at a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre, authorised Queensland Government Agency Program office, or a licensing-issuing police station.
