Renewing your licence when interstate or overseas

If your driver licence will expire while you are travelling interstate or overseas, and you still need to drive after it expires and before returning to Queensland, you can renew your licence by printing and completing a driver licence renewal kit (PDF**, 436KB). This kit contains instructions on how to renew your Queensland driver licence, and includes the forms to be completed.

You may renew your licence up to six weeks before it expires. However, if it has expired, you may have to show extra identification when you apply to renew it. The licence may be granted for a period of not more than five years. You will need to pay a fee when renewing your licence.

You are not eligible for a Queensland driver licence if your licence is suspended or cancelled, or while you are disqualified from holding a driver licence in any Australian state or territory, or any other country.

Note: If you are no longer a resident of Queensland, you need to contact the driver licensing authority in the state, territory or country where you now live to obtain a driver licence.
