Driver licence and renewals

The Queensland Government has introduced a graduated licensing system to help reduce fatalities on the roads — particularly among young drivers. The aim of the system is to encourage safer, more proficient drivers and riders.

Hazard perception test

All P1 type provisional licence holders must pass the hazard perception test in order to graduate to either a P2 type provisional or open licence (dependent on age).

High-powered (performance) vehicle restriction

High-powered (performance) vehicle restrictions apply for the duration of P1 and P2 licence periods for under 25 year olds. These restrictions also apply to probationary licence holders who return from a disqualification to a P1 or P2 probationary licence, where at the time of the offence they were under 25 years of age. These limits apply for the duration of the probationary period regardless of age.

Learner driver kit

After successfully completing your written road rules test and obtaining a learner licence, you will receive a learner driver multimedia kit. This kit contains valuable information for both you and your supervisor.

Learner licence

The first step you need to take before learning to drive a vehicle is to obtain a learner licence for that class of vehicle. The learner driver handbook and supervising driver handbook are available from this page.

P1 licence

Once you have successfully completed a practical driving test, you are eligible to apply for a P1 or P2 provisional licence. A P1 licence for a car (class C) will only be issued to people under the age of 25. You will receive a P1 handbook when you gain your P1 licence. This will provide information about your P1 licence and outline the conditions and restrictions of your licence.
