New Queensland Driver Licence

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is introducing a more secure new Queensland driver licence that will replace the laminated licence that has been used for nearly 20 years.

Other photographic cards issued by the department, including a new Adult Proof of Age card (which will replace the current Card 18+), driver authorisations for passenger transport and a variety of industry licensing authorisations, will also transition from laminated cards to smartcards. A Marine Licence Indicator card will also be introduced for people who do not have a Queensland driver licence.

The equipment and staff training needed to issue the smartcards will be progressively rolled out across the state, with implementation expected to be complete in 2010.

Current driver licence holders will not be required to apply for the new Queensland Driver Licence until their existing licence expires. When the smartcard licence is introduced, people who are due to renew their driver licence (in an area where the smartcard is available) will receive information with their licence renewal notice. Queensland driver licences are valid for up to five years, so it will take up to five years for all Queenslanders to replace their laminated licences with smartcards.
