Partnerships
The key to our success is due largely to our strong partnerships with:
- the Transport and Logistics Workforce Advisory Group (TLWAG)
- transport and logistics industry partners, transport and logistics industry associations, government partnerships, education and training partners, media, unions and other relevant groups.
The purpose of these partnerships is to influence and drive the skills and labour agenda by developing, promoting, piloting and implementing workforce management solutions for the industry.
Government
Senate inquiry
In March 2007, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (then Queensland Transport) was invited to appear before the Senate Standing Committee on Employment, Workplace Relations and Education as part of their inquiry into workforce challenges in the transport industry. The report, released in August 2007, recognised the department as a leader in the 'war for talent'. Numerous references in the report refer to the Department of Transport and Main Roads as a leader in this field.

Department of Education, Training and the Arts
The Queensland Skills Plan establishes the Department of Transport and Main Roads as the lead agency responsible for engaging industry in regards to skilling priorities and future government investment in training for the transport and logistics industry. We bring industry directly into this equation by involving the Department of Education, Training and the Arts in the Transport and Logistics Workforce Advisory Group (TLWAG) meetings, and facilitating direct industry and government communication through our initiatives and programs. We aim for industry to benefit from our partnerships with other state and federal government agencies, and to understand and use government mechanisms to benefit transport and logistics. The Department of Education, Training and the Arts funds an officer to facilitate training outcomes for the transport and logistics industry.
Department of Employment and Industrial Relations
Experience Pays is a program promoting attraction and retention of employees more than 45 years of age. The Department of Transport and Main Roads is proud to support and partner the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations in this initiative. A recent launch was held at Mt Gravatt Coachlines, and the program continues to expand across the transport and logistics industry. Transport and logistics businesses have featured in media campaigns promoting age friendly workplaces. The Department of Employment and Industrial Relations also funds an officer within the Industry Capability branch to work on this initiative in partnership with the transport and logistics industry.
The Skilling Queenslanders For Work strategy is a component of the state government's Queensland Skills Plan initiative. The initiative facilitates targeted skills and labour solutions across industry. The Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Trucking Association and Department of Employment and Industrial Relations have partnered to deliver a tailored transport and logistics strategy for the road transport sector. Get into T&L (Road Transport) supports a diverse range of candidates and employers to deliver education and employment outcomes for the road transport sector. This strategy will deliver training to 120 participants for the road transport sector of the industry.
Skills Formation Strategies — a Department of Education, Training and the Arts initiative
As part of the Queensland Skills Plan, the Department of Education, Training and the Arts has introduced a range of new engagement strategies to better partner with industries on addressing their skilling needs. To effectively address skills shortages, the Queensland Skills Plan identified the use of Skills Formation Strategies to develop relationships and networks between industry, educational providers, and community groups. These strategies identify the real causes of skills shortages, and the development of appropriate solutions.
The Department of Transport and Main Road's Industry Capability branch supports the Queensland Skills Plan through a partnership with the Department of Employment, Training and the Arts, and the project managers responsible for the transport and logistics Skills Formation Strategies. There are strategies for aviation, transport and logistics, with specialist strategies for road transport, and ports and marine.
After an initial 12 months the Skills Formation Strategy — Moving People has now been successfuly transitioned to industry, with the launch of Experience Pays by Mount Gravatt Bus and Coach.
