Is it easy to be TravelSmart?
The benefits of TravelSmart
Brisbane North TravelSmart Communities Project
The TravelSmart team works with communities, schools, destinations and workplaces to raise awareness, improve access to information and generate opportunities to use sustainable transport modes (walking, cycling and using public transport).
TravelSmartTM is the signature brand used by a number of Australian state governments*. In Queensland, TravelSmart is managed by Queensland Transport's Smart Travel Centre.
TravelSmart projects have received funding from Queensland Transport, the Australian Greenhouse Office in the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources and other contributors. Focus on the journeys that can be easily changed. More than 50 per cent of the trips made in urban areas are less than 5km.1 These trips can often be taken by walking, cycling, carpooling or using public transport instead of a motor vehicle.
TravelSmart offers many benefits, including:
- reducing traffic congestion
- helping the environment
- improving health
- saving money
- saving time (exercise as you travel, read on the bus, escape traffic jams)
- reducing stress (relax on a bus and avoid road rage).
Brisbane North TravelSmart Communities Project
Queensland's large urban areas are experiencing levels of congestion that create significant economic, environmental, health and social costs. Queensland Transport has recognised that substantial change in how we travel is needed.
Late in 2006, a survey of more than 70 000 households in Brisbane's northern suburbs revealed that 52 per cent of households were interested in reducing their car use in favour of sustainable transport.
The Brisbane North TravelSmart Communities Project is jointly funded by Queensland Transport, the Australian Greenhouse Office in the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources, and the Brisbane City Council in partnership with TransLink.
Project results include:
- 49 per cent increase in walking
- 58 per cent increase in cycling
- 22 per cent increase in public transport.
The project reduced 114 million kilometres from private car travel equating to a 13 per cent reduction in vehicle kilometres travelled in private cars.
