South East Busway extension

Rochedale to Springwood draft alignment on display

The draft plans for the future extension of the South East Busway from Rochedale to Springwood have been released for public comment. The 2.4 km extension runs along the eastern side of the Pacific Motorway and includes a new busway station at Springwood.

A draft Concept Design Study has been completed. The study is a preliminary investigation of a broad range of environmental, social, engineering and economic issues. It identifies potential benefits and impacts to ensure they are able to be managed appropriately in the future.

The department would like to hear your thoughts on the proposed alignment and design including the draft Springwood busway station plan.

What's happened so far?

The first round of consultation with local residents and businesses occurred between August and September 2008. The majority of people who provided feedback support the project. Key issues raised included existing bus services, potential impacts on homes and businesses, links with the Pacific Motorway Upgrade (Gateway to Logan Motorway), car parking at bus stations and noise mitigation. These issues have been considered in the development of the draft plans.

Feedback showed that the community generally:

How can I get involved?

We are seeking feedback from the community on the draft alignment and the findings of the draft Concept Design Study. Consulting with local residents and businesses to obtain this feedback is an important part of the planning process.

Feedback is invited until Friday 3 July 2009.

Planning already completed — Eight Mile Plains to Rochedale

Initial planning for the busway extension from Eight Mile Plains busway station to Underwood Road, Rochedale was undertaken as part of the Pacific Motorway Upgrade (Gateway to Logan Motorway) in 2006-07. Since then, the department has refined the design and developed a preferred option.

The busway extension to Rochedale runs from the existing Eight Mile Plains busway station, along the eastern side of the Pacific Motorway to a busway station and park 'n' ride at Underwood Road, Rochedale.

This busway station has been designed to be a leading edge public transport facility with approximately 600 spaces in a park 'n' ride facility that has the potential to be redeveloped into a mixed use development, in the future.

Delivery of the busway to Rochedale relies on future funding and may be staged.

Minor changes to Pacific Motorway Upgrade (Gateway to Logan Motorway) planning

The South East Busway Extension and Pacific Motorway Upgrade (Gateway to Logan Motorway) teams have been working together to develop integrated plans for the Rochedale to Springwood busway extension. This will ensure we identify a busway alignment that complements the motorway planning and provides the best solution for the community.

The draft planning layouts for the busway extension from Rochedale to Springwood recommend minor adjustments to the approved Pacific Motorway Upgrade (Gateway to Logan Motorway) planning.

The most significant change is the proposed relocation of the Rochedale Road off-ramp. We are now proposing to move the Rochedale Road off-ramp 200 m further north to intersect Rochedale Road north of Pindari Street. The benefits of this change include significant cost savings, improved safety and less community disruption when the busway is constructed.

Next steps

Following the consultation period and a review of community feedback, the Concept Design Study is scheduled to be finalised and submitted to the Queensland Government for consideration in late 2009.

The final busway alignment and Concept Design Study will be available once approved by the Queensland Government. The land required for the extension to Springwood will be protected and any development proposed within the corridor will then be subject to assessment by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. This means we can integrate any new development with the future busway and minimise potential impacts when the busway is delivered.
