Caravans and light trailers
You will need to visit a Queensland Transport customer service centre to register a caravan or trailer. Not all Queensland Transport customer service centres provide trailer and caravan registration services, so phone Queensland Transport on 13 23 80b to locate your nearest customer service centre that deals with trailers and caravans. If you live in a rural area, you will need to visit a Queensland Government Agency Program office or your local police station. Before moving your unregistered caravan or trailer from its place of purchase, or from where it is currently garaged, you need to complete a Vehicle Registration Application form (F3518). Once you have done this, you can legally tow your unregistered trailer directly to:
- An approved inspection station to obtain a safety certificate if the trailer has an aggregate trailer mass of more than 750 kilograms (kg).
- An authorised gas installer to obtain a gas certificate (if your caravan has gas appliances or fittings).
- A Queensland Transport customer service centre to apply for registration.
When you arrive at the Queensland Transport customer service centre, you can make the process of registration quicker and easier if you have the following:
- A completed Vehicle Registration Application form (F3518). This form is also available from any Queensland Transport customer service centre or, if you live in a rural area, a Queensland Government Agency Program office or your lcoal police station.
- A completed Self Assessment of Single Axle Trailers form (F3970). This is only required for trailers with single axles, no brakes, and an aggregate trailer mass of 750 kg or less.
- Original copy of current safety certificate (required only for trailers in excess of 750 kg aggregate trailer mass).
- A gas certificate—if your caravan is fitted with gas appliances, fittings or systems, you must provide a gas certificate from an authorised gas installer. This certificate must be less than three months old. New caravans fitted with gas appliances, fittings or systems by the manufacturer, do not require a gas certificate. However, if your new caravan is imported and fitted with gas appliances, fittings or systems, you must provide a gas certificate from an authorised gas installer certifying that the gas appliances, fittings or systems comply with Australian standards. This certificate must be less than three months old.
Note: An exemption can be obtained from the Department of Mines and Energy if you are unable to obtain a gas certificate because no one is authorised to issue gas inspection certificates within a reasonable distance of your residence. Exemption forms can be obtained from the Department of Mines and Energy website or contact +61 7 3237 1626a or by email to: gassafe@dme.qld.gov.au. A copy of the exemption issued by the Department of Mines and Energy must be provided to Queensland Transport with an application for registration.
- A weighbridge certificate—or other acceptable evidence of the caravan or trailer's tare (unladen) weight—check with your local Queensland Transport customer service centre for information on alternative acceptable evidence. This is only required if the caravan or trailer has an aggregate trailer mass over 1.02 tonne.
- Evidence of the trailer's origin—old registration papers or an official purchase receipt.
- Evidence of caravan/trailer's garage address—current Queensland driver licence, property rates notice, gas, phone or electricity bill.
- Personal identification—for example, a current Queensland driver licence. Refer to the Evidence of Identity Information Sheet.
- Provide organisation identification—certificate of incorporation, business registration and so on. When registering the caravan or trailer in a business's name, the proprietor must also bring their Queensland driver licence as identification.
Note: Organisation representatives must also bring proof that they are acting on behalf of the organisation and their own personal identification, such as their Queensland driver licence.
- A means of paying the registration fee.
Do not tow your caravan or trailer after midnight on the registration's expiry date if you have not paid your registration fees. Your caravan or trailer will be unregistered and you may be fined.
