Transferring registration from another state or territory
If you and your vehicle move to Queensland, the vehicle must be registered in Queensland within 14 days of your move (and establishment of the new garage address). If you fail to re-register your vehicle in Queensland, you may be fined.
You will need to follow the same process for unregistered vehicles or motorbikes. You can arrange compulsory third party insurance by completing a notice of nomination form at a Queensland Transport customer service centre if your interstate registration is still current.
Other requirements for re-registering the vehicle can be found on the registering motor vehicles and motorbikes page.
When you re-register in Queensland, you can apply for a refund of the unexpired portion of your interstate registration by destroying your windscreen label and handing in your interstate registration number plate/s to a Queensland Transport customer service centre.
Send the receipt you receive for the plate/s to the relevant interstate authority, along with a statement that you have destroyed the label and ask for the registration to be cancelled. You should then receive a refund for the remainder of your interstate registration.
