Workplace fleet safety
Employee safety is importantAlmost one quarter of work-related fatalities happen on the road. In Australia, road crashes are the most common cause of work-related death and injury, and absence from work.
You might think it will never happen in your organisation, but each year 24 per cent of fleet vehicles are involved in a crash. The majority of these light vehicle crashes cost between A$4000 and A$18 000.
Work-related crashes cause unnecessary expense to organisations in terms of repair costs, reduced productivity and death or injury of workers.
At Queensland Transport, we recognise this and have developed a workplace fleet safety system to assist organisations that employ people who drive light vehicles as part of their jobs.
Organisations can become recognised for completion of the system. Organisations that participate in the system will save valuable resources in terms of:
- costs associated with injured employees
- repairs to damaged vehicles
- insurance premiums and excesses
- staff down-time.
The workplace fleet safety system
The workplace fleet safety system is a system designed to increase safety levels for employees and reduce injury. It provides a practical guide to 'best practice' fleet safety in Queensland.
The system contains seven elements of fleet safety linked to Australian Standard AS/NZS ISO 9001:1994—quality systems—model for quality assurance in design, production, installation and servicing.
The system incorporates
Workplace fleet safety: how to conduct a self-audit—a guide that details ways in which fleet safety can be improved.
Workplace fleet safety self-audit workbook—a checklist for conducting a fleet safety audit in your organisation.
Achievement application books (bronze, silver, gold) are available if you would like to apply for recognition.
Recognition
We recognise organisations that have achieved best practice after completion of the workplace fleet safety system. Recognition is awarded at three levels—bronze, silver and gold.

Gold level achievers will be awarded a plaque in recognition of their achievement.
