New smartcard Queensland driver licence

A new smartcard driver licence will replace Queensland's current laminated card which has been in operation for about 20 years.

What is the new Queensland driver licence?

The Queensland driver licence initiative introduces smartcard technology to improve the security of driver licences and other photographic products issued by Queensland Transport. This includes the Card 18+ (also known as a proof of age card), marine licence indicator, driver authorisations for passenger transport and a variety of industry authorisations.

What will the new smartcard driver licence look like?

The new smartcard driver licence will contain the same information as the existing laminated licence. It will also include a digital photograph, digitised signature and a smartchip to store licensing and other information. However the holder's address will not appear on the face of the card but will be stored on the smartchip.

When will the new licence be available?

Queensland will be the first Australian state to introduce this type of licence. The state-wide rollout of the new smartcard driver licence is planned for completion in 2010.

It will take up to five years for all Queenslanders to obtain the new licence as drivers will not be required to apply for a smartcard licence until their existing licence expires. (Queensland driver licences are valid for up to five years.)
